Year-End Podcast Extra: Hilary's Mountain Audio Journal!

A Special Year-End Podcast, From Hilary’s Trip To The Canadian Rockies Last Summer, August 16th Thru The 23rd, 2009, Our New Year’s Gift To You!

Week-Long Alpine Club Fall Hiking Camp at the Stanley Mitchell Hut in Little Yoho Valley (Canadian Rockies)

From the urban wilderness to the actual wilderness and back again.

Almost every year from the age of six to sixteen, Hilary spent a week of her summer vacation in the northern Canadian Rocky Mountains with her sister and parents at the annual Family Camp run by the international mountaineering organization known as the Alpine Club.

They would hook up with other ACC-affiliated families, drive out to the middle of the Rocky Mountains, hike in with enough food and gear for a week, and live communally in a rustic log cabin. Days were spent hiking, nights eating, playing cards, and sitting by the wood stove with friends.

The very first of these trips took place in 1977, shortly after Hilary's family moved out west to Edmonton for her dad's new government job as a computer systems analyst.

The camp that year was in the Little Yoho Valley, one of the most scenic and hikeable areas in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and the group stayed at the Stanley Mitchell Hut; many similar cabins owned by the Alpine Club are found throughout the mountain range, and serve as staging points for mountaineers to take hiking, climbing or skiing day trips deeper into the wilderness than is possible if they had to start from a parking lot near the freeway.

Thirty-two years later, this August, Hilary met up with her dad and sister to participate in the adult Fall camp organized by the Alpine Club at the same hut – the Stanley Mitchell in Little Yoho Valley.

Listen in as Hilary shares daily highlights from her audio diary, reflects on how that early wilderness experience shaped her life and comments on how the area has changed in the past three decades.

Day 0: On The Freeway: Seattle to Abbotsford (Two Parts)
Before you can hike, you have to drive; Hilary drives across the Canadian border to pick up her father and sister from a rural BC airport.

(Be Patient - it may take a minute or two to start streaming)

Time: 1:05:49

Hilary thinks Ira Glass's "This American Life" is the greatest radio show ever. Edward T decided to sample it and found it wanting, to say the least. What to do? Argue, of course.

And of course, Hilary comes to the discussion with facts and a whole bunch of examples and evidence to back her up. Edward T comes with his opinion. Will Hilary win him over? Or will he remain blissfully stubborn? Find out!

In the Science Minute, Hilary has information about fruit bats and fellatio. Say what? It's true, find out how!

And in the Media Minute, Edward T introduces you to the film "The Last Picture Show", a truly brilliant work from 1971.

On this, their tenth (and a half) podcast, they talk to Edward T's mom in Phoenix, Arizona. We get to know her a little bit, then Edward T pushes her to tell embarrassing stories of his youth. Turns out he was a little bit of a comic book fan - and a grocery store hustler.

And be sure to catch the first part of the show, which is on Episode 10 (Click Here), in which Hilary and Edward T call her parents in Canada.

On this, their tenth podcast, they talk to Hilary's parents via Skype internet phone, in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada - that's right, a big international phone call! They get to know her parents a little bit, especially how they met, and find out that Hilary was a car model (kind of).

Edward T asks Hilary's mom how she met her husband; she then shares with them a story she wrote. Then Hilary's dad comes on & tells them about his upbringing. They find out that he took Hilary all over the place when she was a baby - even skiing! Zoiks!

The show continues on Episode 10.5 (Click Here), when Hilary and Edward T call his mom in Arizona.

In their own inimitable fashion, Hilary and Edward T catch up on their last two weeks, including Hallowe'en. They discuss costumes and the cultural impact of the doll Barbie.

Hilary has been getting to know her new job, and Edward T dropped by Hilary's work for lunch.

This launches them on a conversation about science, science labs, junior high school desires and wondering what they wanted to do with their lives, compared to what they did with their lives, and what they've done/what they are doing to change that.

They also discuss communication and its purpose in our lives, especially when used in a certain context, which drives Edward T crazy and sometimes Hilary too!

And Edward T breaks out his Dr. Phil McGraw impersonation...
