2014 Denver Comic Con - Emily C. Martin, "Princeless"

Emily C. Martin - "Princeless"

"It's Not As Anti-Prince As It Sounds."

"All the different princesses have different definitions of what is being saved, what's being rescued...what is being free, what's being a princess."  Emily C. Martin is the co-creator (with originator Jeremy Whitley) of the comic book "Princeless".

It is the story of Princess Adrienne, who is trapped in a tower, and will not wait for her prince to save her.  She instead calls on her guardian dragon Sparky, and she saves herself.  Her adventures continue with her friend, Bedelia the Blacksmith.

Emily & Jeremy's characters are all very different, all searching for their own truth. None need a prince, but some want one.  "Even though it's Prince*less* - (Adrienne) doesn't have a prince - (it) doesn't mean that her sisters don't need one or don't want one - and they're not wrong."

"Princeless" orients the reader to the idea that all of us can choose the life we want, outside of pre-conceived boundaries for gender roles.

Emily discusses working on a comic book with female heroes, being a female artist in the predominately male populated field of comic books and the lack of other female artists in the field.  We discuss her inspirations and influences growing up (especially Disney's "Sleeping Beauty"), and using comic books to learn not only learn how to read, but learn different languages as well.

An intelligent, creative, and inspirational artist, Emily also teaches comic book courses for teen-age artists, paying it forward with Megamoth Studio in Rohnert Park, CA..

2014 Denver Comic Con - Becky Franks-Cassidy, The Kids Corral

The Kids' Corral

"I always say that comics are the gateway to books".

I talked to Becky Franks-Cassidy at the Kids' Corral, a unique, 5000 square-foot, family-friendly area at the 2014 Denver Comic Con.  Children and their families can spend time learning new and creative activities, especially making comic books.  Becky is a former speech pathologist, and says she uses comic books to help children with autism and other challenges to learn through comic books. The comics help take away the intimidation factor of reading, and then eventually the comic book "gateway" helps the children to arrive at books, literature and higher learning.

2014 Denver Comic Con - Aurora as Mulan, CosPlay for Fun

CosPlay for Fun

"CosPlay is a great way for shy people to get out of their skin".

Annie and I met Aurora, who was dressed as "Mulan".  So we asked her about how she got started, why she does it, how CosPlaying grew, and people's motivations for doing it. Aurora says she's not shy, and loves the attention, but not everyone does.  She says that shy people do it too and bring out a different side of themselves - and all for the love of it.

2014 Denver Comic Con - Illya Kowachuk, Comic Book Classroom

Comic Book Classroom

"We knew there was a tremendous, inherit value to pop culture".

Illya Kowalchuk is the Director of Education for the Pop Culture Classroom, the educational program whose mission is to ignite "a love of learning, increases literacy, celebrates diversity and builds community through the tools of popular culture and the power of self-expression".

The Pop Culture Classroom is bringing pop culture to Kindergarten through 12th Grade students, to help them learn the comic creation process, using classic literacy-based lessons to teach students how to create their own story arc, a quality beginning middle and end, reach a climax, arrive at a conclusion, which creates a change in the character.

Or, as we've heard from the Comic Con quite often, pop culture is a gateway to higher learning, literacy and the arts & sciences.

2014 Denver Comic Con - The Information Booth

The Information Booth

"This is a great volunteer opportunity where I can give back to the community, and have a great time at the same time."

I talk to Rica at the information booth, who helps fools like me find where they're supposed to be going, and find what they need at the 2014 Denver Comic Con. The folks at the booth are volunteers, and like so many at Comic Con, doing it because they love it.

2014 Denver Comic Con - Chuck Rozanski, Mile High Comics

Chuck Rozanski from Mile High Comics

"I've been doing this 45 years, and I cannot wait to go to work in the morning".

I talked to Chuck Rozanski at the 2014 Denver Comic Con.  He is the founder of Mile High Comics, which started in 1969, as one of the first of its kind. It is now the biggest comic book dealer & distributor in the United States. My addiction to comics starts with this guy.

He tells his origin story, I share a bit of mine, and we discuss the future of comic book distribution - print or digital?

2014 Denver Comic Con - Geek Speed Dating

Geek Speed Dating

Anyone who's ever fallen in love knows that feeling when you realize "They get me! Finally, someone gets me!"  Imagine how true (and how difficult) that is for geeks when they finally meet each other.

You've already seen the pictures; listen to the sound of Geek Speed Dating at the 2014 Denver Comic Con. Loud, energetic, and smiles everywhere. It melted my heart.

Guys with Cats | ETM-Hilary Kemp 87

Guys with Cats

Welcome back, we've missed you.

Hilary and ETM are recording again after a year and half's break. They talk about what's been going on since production ceased, and what's up now. Much has changed. Hilary's hair is short, ETM's is even shorter (ahem).

They discuss the disco scene of the 70's & the accompanying sleeping around that went with it, drinking & alcholic blackouts, fingernails on lesbians, and guys with cats.

ETM says that there is a huge myth floating around that guys with cats are effimenate, and he is tired of it. Hilary says that the myth doesn't even exist. And the disagreement begins again...

Star Trek also, somehow, gets worked in there too (no surprise).

Enjoy!
